Potential barriers that may prevent a desired outcome for my EBP change proposal is the culture shift and a lack of staff knowledge and confidence in using the sensory room and equipment. Some staff and service user participants talked about the importance of a culture shift if the sensory modulation approach was to be successfully implemented and embedded. It also needs to become a culture but needs support from the upper management. Some staff member resist change and feels that things should be done in the way that they had always been done. Strategies for staff and service users to support cultural shift includes organization wide training, leadership and regular prompts to use it. People with drive and motivated should be assigned in the project to continuously be the driving force to continue regular training and reminders that would get more ingrained in the culture. Service users common concern is that sensory modulation will be less effective if staff members do not appear knowledgeable or confident in supporting them to use the equipment. It not only reduced their ability to relax, but also affected the connection with the staff member and their sense of safety. Some staff members also expressed that they would like more confidence and knowledge in how to facilitate effectively. Strategies or solutions to overcome this are ongoing training, practice and support.
